Immediate volunteer needs – from Volunteer Coordinator Eileen Chun

Please contact Eileen Chun at eileenchun@yahoo.com for more information on any of the following volunteer opportunities.  Please note…. Being a Freshman parent does not exempt you from participating in these roles.  You’ve been doing these jobs  all your adult lives, as parents.   And don’t let your students tell you NOT to help.  They have no idea how important you are to the music program!

Uniform Fittings (8/5-8/17): We only have 20 of 50 slots filled (by 12 people)!  Barb and Audrey can use more help!   You don’t even have to know how to SPELL sewing.  We just need people who can help students find the right size gloves, shoes, hats, pants, and jackets.  It’s shopping for your child without spending money and with limited style options.   Most returning students try on the same uniform they used last year, so it’s basically eyeballing the fit.  Yes, Freshmen parents can handle it, no problem, and you get to hear the latest band gossip!

Band Camp (8/13-8/15): We only have 5 of 70 slots filled. 30 slots take place at Homestead High. 40 slots take place at camp.

  • We need help loading the truck with music stands and instruments before we head to Danville.  The truck has a hydraulic lift, so you aren’t being asked to lift a marimba from the ground into the truck.  We need help pushing tubas and xylophones and racks of music stands to the lift.  The truck does all the heavy work.  We also need help loading the trailer with band supplies, like all those brownies and cookies being donated.

  • Bus chaperones are needed to ride the busses from Homestead to band camp on Friday, as well as from the Athenian school to City Beach in Fremont, and back to Homestead Sunday evening.  We will leave HHS at 1 p.m. Friday Aug 13th.  On Sunday, Aug 15th, we are scheduled to leave the Athenian school at 3:30 p.m., arriving back at Homestead after down-time at City Beach, around 8 p.m.  If you can only ride the bus one way, we can find you a ride back to Homestead Friday afternoon.   We should be able to find you a ride from Homestead to the Athenian on Sunday if you can only chaperone on the return trip.
  • Adults who would love that camping experience, in a big gym with 200 exhausted kids.  We need you to take up space down the middle of the gym floor.  Parents make great fences!
  • Two or three people to drive students to help the instructors and drum major chalk the field at the Athenian.  Mr. Burn would like the field prepared before the marching band arrives at 2, so the time commitment is from 11 am until 2 or3 pm.
  • Day Laborers.  To help with snacks, breakfast and lunch on Sunday, and other little tasks we’ve got lined up.  And don’t worry about your students objecting to your presence… they’ll be too busy to notice you’re there!

Reminder  - Water Bottle Orders due August 2nd!!!

I will be in the band room from 8:30 until 3 pm on Saturday and Sunday if you would like to drop off your water bottle orders before Monday, when the price increases to $18!

Please make sure you print out your parts and bring them with you on Monday, August 9th, our first Beat the Heat practice of the season.

Reminder – Fund Raising Opportunity – Santa Clara Vanguard Bingo

Volunteer slots are still available for August and September at Santa Clara Vanguard Bingo (and slots for October should open soon). This is a great way to "bank" money in your scrip account to pay for music fees during the year.
