About John Burn
John Burn has been the Director of Bands and Orchestra at Homestead since 1991. He is the Music Department Chair and currently teaches Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and the computer-based general music class, Music Genesis. The concert band classes at Homestead combine with the color guard to form the award-winning 250-member marching band, also under John's direction.
John’s ensembles consistently earn high ratings at both regional and international festivals. The Homestead High School Marching Band was one of only ten marching bands selected Nation-wide to perform at the 2011 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City! John has directed Homestead ensembles in: Carnegie Hall, New York City (2007 and 2011), Honolulu, Hawaii, (2011), Walt Disney Concert Hall, downtown Los Angeles (2010), Australia’s Sydney Opera House (2009), Japan, Tokyo and the Kobe Jazz Festival (2005), Austria (2001 and 2003), Germany (2001 and 2003) and the Czech Republic (2003).
John is humbled and honored to have recently received several significant commendations: 2012 CMEA (The California Association for Music Education) President’s Award, 2011 FUHSD District Teacher of the Year, awarded by Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce, 2010 CMEA “Don Schmeer/Byron Hoytt” Band Director of the Year Award, 2009-2010 Homestead High School Teacher of the Year, and 2009 Inductee to the John Philip Sousa Foundation’s Bandworld Legion of Honor.
John believes strongly in serving the profession beyond his responsibilities at Homestead.
